Curatio Server is the self-hosted backend for the Curatio app. The Docker image is available on GitHub — set it up on a home server, NAS, Mac mini, or any VPS in minutes. Point it at your media folders and it handles the rest: scanning, metadata, user accounts, and streaming.

Four steps from a folder of video files to a fully featured streaming experience on your Apple TV.

Run Curatio Server

Clone the repo, add your TMDB key and media path to .env, and start with Docker Compose. The server scans your files automatically.

Create your account

Log in to the admin panel, generate an invite code, and register your user account at your server's address.

Pair the app

Open Curatio on Apple TV or iPhone. A 6-character code appears on screen — enter it at your server's pairing page and you're connected.

Press play

Your entire library appears with artwork, cast, episode guides, and Continue Watching. Sit back.

What do I need to run Curatio?

The Curatio app is coming soon to the App Store for Apple TV and iPhone. Curatio Server — the self-hosted backend — is free and open source, available on GitHub now. You'll need Docker to run it and a free TMDB API key for metadata and artwork.

Where are my files stored?

On your hardware — always. Curatio Server reads from the media directories you specify and streams directly to the app. No files are uploaded anywhere.

Can I access my library away from home?

Yes. If you expose Curatio Server to the internet (via a domain, reverse proxy, or VPN like Tailscale), the Curatio app works identically over any network.

Which file formats are supported?

Curatio uses AVKit on Apple platforms, which natively supports MP4, MKV, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and HLS. Most modern video files play without any conversion.

Can I share my library with family?

Yes. Curatio Server supports multiple user accounts, each with independent watch progress and history. You control access through one-time invite codes — no open sign-ups.

How does intro skip work?

Curatio Server analyses episode audio to detect repeated segments like title sequences and credit rolls. Detection runs in the background — no microphone is used and no audio data leaves your server.

Which Apple devices are supported?

Curatio runs on Apple TV (4th generation and later) and iPhone (iOS 17 and later). iPad support is included with the iPhone app.

What we collect

Curatio collects no personal data, usage analytics, or telemetry. The app operates entirely between your device and your chosen Curatio Server.

iCloud sync

If you enable iCloud sync in Settings, your app preferences are synced via your personal iCloud account. This data is not accessible to Curatio.

Local network access

Curatio requests local network permission to discover and connect to servers on your home network. No data from your local network is transmitted to any Curatio service.

Credentials

Your server credentials are stored exclusively in your device's secure Keychain and are never transmitted to or stored by Curatio.

Third-party servers

When you connect to a media server, you are subject to that server operator's privacy policy. Curatio is not responsible for third-party data practices.
